Pixar’s “Inside Out” is certainly doing enough to surprise film critics.

The animated comedy film had a big Friday night as it racked in $34 million followed by a record breaking $3.7 million in its limited Thursday night showings. The fiilm is on its way to earn more than $80 million on its debut weekend. That will be the best opening for any Pixar film besides Toy Story 3 which hit $110.3 million mark on its opening weekend at North American box office.

It is quite impressive considering the tough competition from science fiction adventure flick Jurassic World, which turned out to be one of the biggest sensations in box office history. The film is on track to score the biggest second weekend $29 million on Friday for a total of more than $103 million, possibly beating the all-time record of $103 million set by “The Avengers” in 2012.

Chris Pratt staring film already broke several records in its opening weekend. “Jurassic World” now holds the record for best domestic opening weekend ever with $208.8 million, edging out “The Avengers” $207.4 million. The biggest worldwide opening record ($524.1 m) is also held by the dino pic alongside the record for biggest foreign opening with $315.6 million, dethroning Harry Potter and Deathly Hollows – Part 2 ($314 m).

Jurassic World continues to dominate box office. That means “Inside Out” will be first Pixar title to not open at No.1 spot. In terms of biggest openings, Toy Story ranks number one followed by Monsters University with $82.4 million.

Directed by Pete Docter, Inside Out is set in the mind of a young girl Riley Anderson whose emotions joy, fear, anger, disgust and sadness try to lead her through life as she is heading towards a new city with his family. Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling and Phyllis Smith gave the voices to all five aforementioned emotions respectively.

Melissa McCarthy’s Spy ($3.75 m), newly released Dope (2.78 m) and Dwayne Johnson’s earthquake disaster San Andreas ($2.18 m) round out the top five films of the weekend.
