Both the Hollywood stars launched a campaign named “100%” on Thursday, focusing on the mass use of renewable energy and ensuring its availability.
Talking about the objective of the campaign, Leonardo DiCaprio said. “This is a grassroots people’s movement but the ambition of this movement is absolutely revolutionary. Clean energy grows local economies.” The 40-year old told in an event held at a community garden in New York City.
Mark Ruffalo, the actor, activist and the co-founder of the campaign called the access to renewable energy a “serious issue”.
“This is really mankind’s greatest threat, and it should take some serious problem solving on all of our parts. And we don’t really have to give up anything to do it…We will be collecting the sun and the wind that falls on us every single day.”
Ruffalo added. “I just came in from Los Angeles, where I was doing some press, and they think they’ve got something on us concerning renewable energy. They’ve got nothing on us. We are coming for you Governor Brown.”
The initiative was announced just few hours after Pope Francis pointed out the issue and pleaded for a revolution to combat climate changes. The pontiff said that it is the humanities reckless behavior that has pushed planet on the verge of “breaking point.”
Leonardo DiCaprio is a vocal advocate for clean environment for the last few years and himself uses eco-friendly products. Couple of months ago, the actor announced to create an eco-conscious resort in an island off Belize, which will be open to the guests in 2018.
