One of the visitor at the festival explained to CNN that crispy dogs smell really good and are delicious to eat. The festival is responsible for serving 10,000 dogs as meals and has become a battlefront in China’s animal rights movement.
Many activists are of the view that many of these dogs are stolen household pets and are transported thousands of miles in wired cages without being given food or water. Many of these dogs then arrive at their destination malnourished and diseased before being slaughtered and served up to customers.
However now a new generation of Chinese animal lovers are raising their voice over this act and terming dogs as companions. China has an estimated population of 130 million dogs of which 27 million are urban pets.
Apart from this there are a number of signs that show dog meat is losing its popularity in some places. According to Peter Li who works for Humane Society International explained that 10 years ago killing dogs for meat was very common in Beijing’s suburbs but today this is something very rare. Apart from this in the city of Guangzhou a dog meat restaurant that had been in operation for 51 years recently closed.
At this year’s Yulin festival dozen of activists along with their pets came to rescue the dogs. Some activists have planned to hand in a petition to the local authorities demanding an end to the killing of dogs for food. Some even went as far as rescuing the dogs from the slaughter house.
An activist explained that he bought the animals in the slaughter house in order to save them and stated that these dogs have all kinds of diseases but the butcher doesn’t care. Moreover the festival is also generating outrage internationally. Moreover a woman even paid over $1000 to save 100 dogs from being slaughtered.

Despite all the criticism the locals state that this festival is their tradition and one woman stated that every person has different thinking and I think eating pork is really brutal then no one should eat pork, but that cannot happen.
