SpaceX and Tesla founder Elon Musk made waves earlier this month again for his plans to launch satellites beaming down internet from space. This is though nothing novel.

Satellite company Eutelsat announced today that the Postal Service in Italy will equip 300 rural postal offices with Eutelsat's satellite broadband internet service. With the Eutelsat KA-SAT satellite the post offices will get accelerated download speeds of up to 22Mbps and upload speeds of up to 6 Mbps. This enables customers and employees to get internet access like they would get in urban areas.

While Elon Musk is still planing internet satellites, Eutelsat is already delivering broadband to areas in Europe that do not have access to the broadband infrastructure. Eutelsat is delivering internet from space with their KA-SAT satellite. This high throughput satellite is configured with 82 spotbeams and connected to a network of ten ground stations. According to the company it is the most advanced multi-spot satellite in the world.

The satellite’s ground network uses ViaSat’s SurfBeam 2 technology, which enables frequencies to be reused 20 times and takes total throughput to beyond 90 Gbps. The KA-SAT provides cost-effective and competitive solutions to users across Europe and the Mediterranean Basin, delivering speeds of up to 22 Mbps downstream and 6 Mbps upstream.

Eutelsat coverage

Eutelsat is offering the KA-Sat broadband connectivity for Backup, remote access, VPN solutions, video surveillance and many more applications. News organizations are able to use KA-SAT to transfer footage from locations with no terrestrial connectivity. The VPN solution is essential for closed networks that are used to connected office branches.

Eutelsat is focused offering their satellite broadband internet services to businesses in a wide range of industries including Media, Automative and Banking. There is no end consumer offering which is in the vision of Elon Musk's fleet of about 4,000 micro-satellites to provide broadband Internet services around the globe. Eutelsat is providing internet solutions to the tourism industry, which enables hotels in rural areas to offer internet service to its guests.
