It is only the fifth film ever to make more than $500 million in North America.
The Jurassic World has become only the fifth film in history to cross the $5oo million mark domestically after just closely winning the weekend ahead of ‘Inside Out’. On the other hand Seth MacFarlane’s R-rated Ted 2 suffered greatly at the box office this weekend.
Don't Miss: iPhone 8: Everything You Need to Know
The $68 million comedy which reunited MacFarlane and Mark Wahlberg stood at the third place and could only gross a disappointing $32.9 million. This is nearly 40 percent behind the $54.4 million launch of Ted in the summer of 2012. Moreover overseas Ted 2 opened to a $20.3 million from 26 markets for a global launch of $53.2 million.
Well if we remember the first film did not face any competition from two giant blockbusters as Ted 2 did from Universal’s Jurassic World and Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out. These two movies continue to claim the top two spots.
Jurassic World has claimed to be one of the biggest box-office sensations in history and has grossed $54.2 million in its third outing and just hit the $500 million mark. By doing so the movie has become only the fifth film ever to earn $500 million or more domestically.
The other movie that are in this category include The Dark Knight which had bagged $534.9 million, The Avengers which had grossed a whopping $623.4 million, Titanic with $658.7 million and on top of this chart is the Avatar which bagged an outstanding $760.5 million. Apart from this the Jurassic World has also become the top grossing movie of 2015 after taking over Avengers: Age of Ultron that had bagged $452.5 million.
Apart from dominating the domestic market the movie has been at the top of the foreign chart with $82.5 million from 66 markets for an offshore total of $737.5 million and a global haul of $1.238 billion.
This means that the movie has taken over Iron Man 3 to become the number 8 title of all time. However it wasn’t smooth sailing for Jurassic World in North America as it faced tough competition from Inside Out and the Jurassic World just narrowly won the weekend.
Apart from these two big blockbusters we have the Minions and Paramount and Skydance’s Terminator: Genisys. Both of these movies have opened early overseas and Minions which is in the second week has grossed a total of $36 million from 10 markets for an early foreign total of $51.7 million.
On other hand Terminator: Genisys has been launched in 10 markets this weekend and is ahead of its July 1 North American launch. The movie is starring Emilia Clarke, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jason Clarke.
