After forty years of having provided her voice for Maria Sonia Manzano is retiring from the beloved children’s show.
Sonia Manzano the veteran who voiced one of the most beloved characters on the long running children’s classical show will be retiring. Manzano gave her voice for the character of Maria on Sesame Street and will be retiring after 45 years on the show.

The news of Manzano’s departure was announced by the American Libararies Association on Twitter in the form of a tweet. According to the tweet, Manzano will not be appearing on the next season of the show Sesame Street.
While Sesame Street itself has yet to announce an official statement regarding Manzano’s retirement, Manzano herself has confirmed the news. Since the news broke out fans have been devastated and have expressed their feelings on Twitter. Monzano on the other hand has been consoling fans saying it might not be goodbye forever and she may return on the show as a guest for the 50th anniversary.
On a lighter note Manzano admitted she has always been in love with the character Oscar the Grouch on the show Sesame Street and fans should not take the news of her departure so hard. Manzano also tweeted it may be the end of an era but it is also a new beginning o for her and new ventures.
Manzano first joined the cats of the show Sesame Street back in 1971 and voiced a teenage Maria and even served as a writer on the show. During her time as Maria on the show, Manzano has received a whopping 15 Emmy Awards. The character of Maria has since evolved from a teenager to being married to Luis and together they own the Fix-It shop on the show.
