Selma fame director decided to turn down the project due to creative differences
Ava DuVernay is finally putting an end to months of speculations about directing Marvel’s “Black Panther” and becoming the first black female to helm a superhero film.

The report was not completely false indeed. Marvel approached her for the project. DuVernay pondered upon it but turned it down over creative differences.
“I’m not sighing on to direct Black Panther,” the director of “Selma” told Essence on Friday. “I think I’ll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be. Marvel has a certain way of doing things and I think they’re fantastic and a lot of people love what they do. I loved that they reached out to me.”
“Black Panther”, which is expected to release in the mid of 2018, features Chadwick Boseman in the lead character of Black Panther /T’Challa, the ruler of the fictional place of Wakanda. Black Panther is the first ever mainstream black superhero. No comic book ever had any black character before him.
“I loved meeting Chadwick and writers and all the Marvel exes. In the end it comes down to story and perspective. And we just didn’t see eye to eye. Better for me to realize that now than cite creative differences later.”
DuVernay continued. “I love the character of Black Panther, the nation of Wakanda and all that that could be visually. I wish them well and will be first in line to see it.”
Ava DuVernay is mostly known for her solid work in documentaries and has directed films likes “I Will Follow” and “Middle of Nowhere” and award-winning “Selma”, which is based on the novel of civil rights leader James Bevel. Directing a superhero movie would be an altogether new challenge for her. Given the fact she was not much interested in comic books and also not familiar with Marvel.
“I am not a big comic book fan, but I know I love to deconstruct heroes, deconstruct myths…I don’t know about Marvel but I love to tell all kind of stories”. DuVernay earlier said in a statement.

In the movie, she is teaming up third time with actor David Oyelowo with whom she has worked in Selma and Middle of Nowhere before. DuVernay other upcoming project is a television series “Sugar Queen” which is set to shoot in the fall of 2015 and will air on Oprah Winfrey Network.
