The famous ballerina will perform in musical "On the Town" from August 25 through September 6
Just days after becoming the first black principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre, Misty Copeland is ready to take on another big and exciting challenge. The famous ballerina is heading to the Broadway this summer.
Copeland will be joining the cast of “On the Town” next month and playing the role of Ivy Smith, which was previously portrayed by another principal dancer Megan Fairchild. Her performances will last for two weeks, starting on August 25 through to September 6.
“I was contacted by them and they actually wanted me to go in pretty quickly, and it was all just ‘Oh my gosh, this is not something I ever thought I would do,” Misty Copeland told TIME. “If I’m going to be a part of a Broadway show, I think this is the one.”
Misty Copeland is already draw huge crowds in ballet theatre with her performances in “Lake Swan”, Romeo and Juliet” and “Firebird” and is expected to replicate her success in Broadway as well.
Talking about the inclusion of Misty Copeland in “On the Town, the show’s producer Howard Kagan said, “We are so thrilled to have Misty joining us at this momentous time in her career.”
Kagan continued, “On the Town has a long history of progressive, diverse casting which began with the creative team’s casting of Japanese-American dancer Sono Osato as Ivy Smith in the original 1944 production, in the midst of World War II, as well as featuring one of the first racially-integrated ensembles. So it seems fitting that this incredible talent, who has broken through barriers in the dance world, will make her Broadway debut with this show.”
“On the Town”, which is currently playing at Lyric Theatre, is a show with music by Leonard Bernstein and a book and lyrics by Batty Camden and Adolf Green. The musical is based on the idea of Jerome Robbins and choreographed by Joshua Bergasse. John Rando is the director of the show. “On the Town” tells the story of three sailors who get to a visit to New York City. They experience so many things in their single-day tour, including falling in love with the girl of their dreams.
Misty Copeland will play the love interest of one of the sailors, she said. “It’s so strong and rich with the dancing, and it’s such an incredible role. Jerome Robbins was such an incredible of American Ballet Theatre’ history, so it makes total sense.”
