Apple Store is Down as New iPods Arrive

The report about an iPod touch and shuffle refresh just got more weight. The Apple Store is down for maintenance.

Earlier we carried a report that Apple will release today a new generation of iPod touch and the iPod shuffle. Now the Apple Store is down world-wide, which is a very strong indicator that the report of the new iPods is true.

There will be no new features in the refreshed iPod touch and iPod shuffle, but performance improvements. The camera in the new 2015 iPod touch will be upgraded from 5MP to 8MP catching up with the iPhone 6. A new 64-bit CPU will make iOS run smoother. Also new is the M chip for fitness tracking. According to the report there will be a new 128GB iPod touch selling for $399. There will be a new gold color and also the shuffle will be offered in additional colors.

Apple has not updated the iPod since 2012. It is overdue, but the iPod has lost its importance in the Apple portfolio because of the iPhone. The iPods and MP3 player have become a niche.

The Apple Store is expected to be back online around 8am or 9am PDT.

Today is a big online sales day with the Amazon Prime Day going on and the competing Walmart sale. Apple has a hand for choosing days like this to steal attention away for themselves.

It is still confusing to me why Apple has to take down the online store when adding a new product. At least they could keep unaffected sections open for business. Amazon is adding and removing deals constantly without shutting down.
