With some of the prophecies of gloom and doom peddled by the environmentalists being debunked, the only question in the minds of the public is: is global warming for real?

The world is supposedly getting hotter and hotter due to carbon emissions and the resultant global warming has led to a massive meltdown of the arctic snow caps.

This was the frightening prediction and doomsday scenario that got made quite a few years back. The only difference is that never has the ice been available in such large quantities in that region as at the present moment of extreme pollution and environmental destruction.

It is precisely such futuristics that are way off the mark that have led to the public’s faith in environmentalists waning down to a bare minimum. Nowadays environmentalists are thought of as nutty tree huggers who are not the least bit realistic or even practical for that matter.

But there is some degree of truth to the “hit the panic button” situation described by ecologists and global weather experts. While it is not like it is the end of the world, the light bulb is getting dim.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was addressing a packed audience recently on global warming. He said that though he had acted in many sci-fo movies, this issue was for real and nothing about it reeked of science fiction.

He said that we all ought to lend our contribution to the tributary that is the quality of the global environment so that our progeny lives in a world that is better than our current one. The members of various faiths and denominations were there at the conference too.

They re-affirmed the fact that if we didn’t act now, the world would go to the dogs. The Pope’s recent encyclical on ecology was also brought up for discussion.

The real wastage and profligate spending occurs at the governmental level too and is handled in pounds and sterling. We humans have to make a living and survive as a species. After all, we are just another life form and do not happen to be Mother Nature’s favorite.

Although we are on top of the food chain, that is something which can change anytime when seen on the geological scale. When such natural phenomena as the rainforest and the world’s flora and fauna go extinct, mankind will be swept along with it into the blind alley of oblivion.

Yet it has been said that pollution and climate change are the very source of new species and entirely novel life forms that will flourish on earth. It is a very narrow and human view that pollution is entirely bad since what is bad for man may be good for some other life form that overtakes it.
