The following are 10 solid reasons to give up the addiction of smoking for the sake of your health and well-being.

Smoking is a curse of modern times. It is a scourge and a great menace to personal and public health. Every time the average smoker takes a puff or two of his cigarette, he not only endangers his body’s systems but also contributes to unintended passive consumption by others in his vicinity. And with women catching up with their male counterparts as far as this game of death is concerned, the precarious situation has only doubled in its intensity. There are as many reasons to quit smoking as there are not to start the habit in the first place. Let’s start with the first one…

Reason #1: Cessation of Female Hot Flashes. Female smokers who throw away their last cigarette may face less hot flashes in their menopause, according to Reuters. They in fact have 45% less chances of undergoing the unpleasant sensations. Yet these women would have fared better had they not engaged in smoking to begin with. Then their rate of experiencing hot flashes would have been close to nil.

Reason #2: Lowered Risk for Many Diseases. As expatiated upon by CDC, when smokers call it quits, a host of benefits automatically accrue to them. These include: lesser chances of cancer and tumor growth, reduced incidents of coronary disease and stroke, fewer respiratory problems and last but not least sharply lowered appearance of infertility in women.

Reason #3: Saying Good Riddance to Nicotine Dependence. Nicotine dependence is such a bad thing that it haunts one for the rest of one’s life unless one takes the trouble to give up the oral pleasure. The number of pains that one will have to face later on due to this dirty habit are too many to go into. It is a good idea to slowly or suddenly wean oneself away from the attraction of lighting up a cigarette. Mental clarity and more robust health will obviously ensue once your system is free of the drug that is nicotine.

Reason #4: Being Superman Between the Sheets. It is a fact of life according to NHS that swearing that you will not touch another cigarette in your life and acting on the advice will lead to a more active and enjoyable sex life. Men and women will have have better erections and orgasms respectively.

Reason #5: Your Skin Deserves a Break. The only thing you can get from smoking is wrinkles and a gaunt, haggard-looking face. But once you quit the results are obvious. Younger and more radiant skin will the biggest cosmetic benefit.

Reason #6: Sparkling Strong Teeth that Last. If you are an ex-smoker, you will have teeth that regain their whiteness and strength. But if you keep on smoking, they will have stains on them like the teeth of coffee drinkers. Nobody likes to show a set of 32 teeth that are as ugly as those of a poor starving artist on the streets of Paris.

Reason #7: Lots of Longevity. Those who smoke often die of complications way earlier than their non-smoking counterparts. Even ex-smokers are better off since they have checked the deterioration of their physical systems in the nick of time. The lungs and heart take a beating from too much tobacco smoke entering them incessantly. Quit and live to be 120 (if luck and good genes are on your side).

Reason #8: The Sheer Satisfaction of Stress Relief. Smoking may be a pleasure but it is a costly one. Stress levels hit the roof when you start chain-smoking. So ditch the cigarette habit and watch your anxiety and blues take a nosedive. You can then relax on a sunny beach in the Bahamas without that cigarette in your hand.

Reason #9: Feel Fresh and Energetic. Quitting smoking frees the body to engage in all the purposes it was supposed to partake in. With better circulation of the blood throughout the arteries and veins of your body, you will feel a sudden surge of energy, vim and vigour within four months of throwing that final cigarette into the trash can (where it belongs).

Reason #10: Domestic Safety and Security. The hazard is always there. If your cigarette finds its way in such a place in your home where it is in contact with combustible material, the words “big trouble” ring true. You have to be extra-vigilant when you smoke lest one small careless act result in loss of limb and life via a fire. So the best thing is not to take on the filthy addiction. And even if you have then the most intelligent thing is to quit cold turkey. Your body, mind and soul will thank you for doing what is good and right.
