Over half a million people in China got asked to calculate the rate at which they ate spicy food. Those questioned were middle aged or older. These test subjects got tracked for a period of seven years during which 20,000 of them died.
Those who took hot and spicy food more than twice a week were less likely to die off. They were hardy and resistant to diseases. Those who ate spicy foods less than once per week were more likely to be among the 20,000 who kicked the bucket.
There were those who ate spicy foods three to four days a week. They were 14% less likely to be among the 20,000 who ended pushing up the daisies. Most of the study got based on the keen observation of the scientists. We cannot be sure that there is a link between spicy food and longevity.
Correlation doesn’t always equal causation. More information needs to get gathered. That is before a final statement about the matter can emerge. It is not known why spicy foods lower death rate. But a few clues got found.
For one thing, spicy foods lower inflammation and fight obesity. They also change the gut flora and fauna. The spicy agents included: chili pepper, dried chili pepper, chili sauce and chili oil. The first two of these were used.
It is unclear at present if the changes in longevity is the direct result of chili pepper ingestion. Chili pepper may just an example of a diet that is healthy. The benefits could result from a variety of other food items. Chili peppers are just one component.
Till the present moment, the matter hangs in the air. It is an undecided fact although there may be some truth to it. Chili peppers are a part of a traditional diet. And so the benefits may just have more to do with the sort of regimen our grandparents followed in their times.
