The first music and family inspired drama on broadcast television in a decade, Empire certainly turned heads. It was one of the dramas to get a high viewership last year. The cast and the crew were all excited about the success of the show. They did not receive an Emmy nomination to show for that success.
Except for Taraji P. Henson who got nominated for Best Actress, the show did not get nominated. Creator Lee Daniels was certainly frustrated. He posted a video on Instagram saying some nasty words for Emmy voters, according to E! News.
Now, a few months later, Daniels clarified that his video was taken in the wrong context. He wasn’t angry in the video. He was just presenting his own brand of humor. He said that his followers on social media might have understood it better. A lot of his friends were among the nominees so he was happy that they had been nominated.
He said that he had a sit down with the cast and crew of the show about not getting a nomination. Terrence Howard and he came to a mutual agreement that they were lucky to be working at all. He said a lot of talented people that we know who are not employed.
Lee said that they thanked God that they had work. They were working on something that they loved. Lee said that there was a lot of space for him to express himself. Being gay and black, the show represented a lot of him.
The next season of the show will contain definitely more of the family. Mariah Carey has already been confirmed as a guest star. He said that they are going to keep the guest stars to a low. Putting in guest stars just takes away the attention from the family. They want the family to be the sole focus. The core story in itself is so strong.
The series itself presents a potential for various spin offs. Whether its Cookie’s story, where she came from, how she grew up, how she met Luscious. Then there is Luscious’ story. How he became Luscious Lyon.
We know that it is a made up name as he tells Jamal in the season finale. Lee said that there was currently no spin off in the works but there is potential. He said that Fox has facilitated the show a lot by making a great schedule. The show will be returning for its second season on September, 23rd.
