Empire and Inside Amy Schumer Dominate TCA Awards 2015

"Late Show With David Letterman" honored with Heritage Award.

“Empire” won the top most honor at 31st annual Television Critics Association Awards ceremony on Saturday.

Fox hip-hop drama is named the Program of the Year. “Inside Amy Schumer won Outstanding Achievement in Comedy. Individual Achievement in Comedy also went to Amy Schumer. 

Empire ran from January 7 to March 18 on Fox and featured Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson. Trai Byers and Jussie Smollett in lead roles. The drama received four nominations overall: Program of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Drama, Outstanding New Program and Individual achievement in Drama (Taraji P. Henson) but snubbed in three categories. The second season will kick off on September 23 where personalities like Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey and Pittbull are expected to make guest appearances. 

Jon Hamm from Mad Men took home the Individual Achievement in Drama. “Mad Men” ended in May after completing seven seasons. “Better Call Soul” and “The Americans” won the Outstanding New Program and Outstanding Achievement in Drama respectively. Late Show with David Letterman received the Heritage Award. The final episode of Late Show was aired on May 20. The 33-year spanning career of David Letterman was also finished with the show. 

“This was a truly monumental year for television,” Scott D. Pierce, TCA president said. “We said goodbye to some old favorites, with the final season of Mad Men and Late Show with David Letterman, and we were treated to strong new additions like Fox’s Empire and HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. There were lot of different choices to be made, but there’s no doubt that the nominees and winners all deserve their accolades.”

Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries and Specials: The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst (HBO)

Outstanding Achievement in Drama: The Americans (FX)

Outstanding Achievement in Comedy: Inside Amy Schumer (Comedy Central)

Outstanding New Program: Better Call Saul (AMC)

Career Achievement Award: James L. Brooks

Heritage Award: Late Show/Late Night with David Letterman (CBS/NBC)

Program of the Year: Empire (Fox)
