  • Magic Johnson told WEEI on Aug. 10 he's a fan of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

Los Angeles Lakers legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson told WEEI he's "a Tom Brady fan." Johnson said he won't watch Patriots games Brady won't be playing in in the upcoming 2015 NFL season.

It turns out Magic Johnson is a Tom Brady fan.

This was what Johnson told WEEI's John Tomase on Aug. 10. Johnson made the revelation during the Jeffrey Osborne Charity Softball Game in Pawtucket, R.I.

The Los Angeles Lakers legend told Tomase he will not watch any Patriots game Brady will not play in:

"I'm a Tom Brady fan. I don't want to see Tom Brady miss one game. Because then I'm not watching. I'm just telling you like it is, I want to see Tom Brady and the Patriots.

"Look, we're all competitive. We don't want to see New England without Tom Brady. If you're a great football team and a great football player, you want to have them at their best, and that's who you want to beat."

Johnson also stressed he is not concerned about others' opinions on Brady. The NFL has upheld Brady's four-game suspension due to the "DeflateGate" scandal, per WEEI:

"I want to see Tom Brady against the AFC East, because I believe it's going to be the best division in football. The (New York) Jets have improved, the (Miami) Dolphins have improved, the (Buffalo) Bills have a great defense. So I want to see. I'm a big football fan, a big NFL fan.

"I think that first of all, Tom Brady is a champion. I believe it's five times, I believe. Okay, four-time Super Bowl champion -- five's coming.

"I think he's been the face of the league, is the face of the league, will continue to be the face of the league. And then also, too, the respect I have for the organization. Robert Kraft has done a wonderful job. He's a good friend of mine. I support him.

"And Bill Belichick is the best coach in all of football. So one thing people have got to realize that has to happen -- players gotta play. I don't care about videos. Balls don't decide the game. It's players that decide who wins and who loses.

"I don't care what anybody says. They went out there and won the (Super Bowl)."

Johnson wasn't the only big-name individual who has made his support for Brady known.

Massachusetts governor Charlie Baker wore a "Free Brady" shirt. He did so when he participated in this year's ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

WCVB-TV Boston tweeted a photo of Baker on Monday.

Brady and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell have a scheduled court appearance on Aug. 12.

Goodell was in Canton, Oh. this week for the induction ceremony for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's 2015 class. This group includes Jerome Bettis, Tim Brown, Bill Polian, Charles Haley, Will Shields, Mick Tingelhoff and Ron Wolf, per

Goodell spoke with The Canton Repository's Todd Porter while he was in town. The NFL commissioner said he considers Brady "a great player" and "a great young man":

"The integrity of the game is the most important thing. The integrity of the game is something we will always protect. The rules apply to everybody. This is my job in particular, to make sure everyone from our players to our coach, to our fans and our partners, that they all recognize we're going to play by these sets of rules, and that's part of our values and standards.

"Listen, he's a great player and he's a great young man. We issued the decision just last week. We're in the midst of litigation to...ensure that that's enforced the way we ruled on that, after a long process that is established in our collective bargaining agreement. That's something we'll play through."

Johnson hopes Goodell and Brady sort things out sooner than later, per WEEI:

"I hope the commissioner, they work this out. Hey, give him a fine. I don't care. Just give the team a fine and let's move on with it. Plus, the fans are tired of it. We are all tired of it. We want football in a couple of weeks and I want Tom Brady to be in there. That's it. Point blank."
