Descendants original soundtrack album was able to Billboard album chart despite being one of the lowest number in album sales history.

The artists have been at it for a long time now. Ever since the advent of the internet streaming and downloading business, the music industry has not been the same.

Nielsen Music began recording the chart ratings in 1991. It wouldn’t have thought at that time that album sales market would change drastically.

The album sales are now calculated by the multi-metric consumption. which is inclusive of traditional album sales, track equivalent album and streaming equivalent album.

The soft openings for this month were based on the system. And the numbers came out to be in the favor of the soundtrack of the Disney latest movie; “Descendants”.

Descendants is based on the theme of the off-springs of some classic Disney villains. The movie was recently released on the Disney channel as a feature film. The soundtrack album release followed. It scored about 42,000 units on the Billboard Top 200 charts.

Although rated at No.1, the unit numbers are the lowest recorded in history. And that saying that the list consists of Taylor Swift’s 1989 at third spot and Ed Sheeran’s X is at  number 4.

Despite selling over a million albums with clever strategy, Taylor’s 1989 dropped by an estimate of 30% to land at the third spot.

It is great news for the soundtracks though. Descendants will be the fourth soundtrack album this year to top the Billboard charts.

The slot has already been taken by the original soundtrack of Empire, Furious 7 and Pitch Perfect 2. The reason being that the songs are released by with the release of the movie.

They do not enjoy the same build-up as an individual artist album. It does not face the same scrutiny or threat of piracy or leaks as an artist’s album does. Hence upon its release, its demand is not slackened by internet takeover.

Descendants OST is the lowest ever unit album.  But it has managed to snag the first spot for itself. Descendants OST feature songs from the movie that was released and also some other track.

The album is not expected to stay long. As Luke Bryan’s Kill the Lights and Dr. Dre’s Compton is set to release on August 7th. The albums are sure to sell out fast and dominate the charts.
