Rumor has it that Apple is planning to launch a new Apple TV that will have better graphics and a remote that doubles as a controller and tool to buy games.
Apple is expected to unveil a new Apple TV that will focus on gaming, reports the New York Times. Sources told the paper that Apple wants games to be a main selling point of the next-generation Apple TV. The new product will be announced alongside a new iPhone and iPad on Wednesday this week.
Games are a huge market in today’s connected world where mobile devices are replacing PCs. Apple entered the games business when it launched the first iPhone in 2007. Today, the company gets nearly a third of its revenue from games and apps on the App Store. PricewaterhouseCoopers estimates the revenue from gaming consoles to reach over $27 billion this year.
The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that the new Apple TV will cost $150, more than the price of the current Apple TV. However, many games consoles like the Xbox and PlayStation are more expensive, selling for around $300 to $500, depending on the specifications.
The new Apple TV will have the standard components needed to work as a streaming device. It’s a TV, after all. But it will also feature more power for better graphics. The device will also come with a new remote that will function as a controller and a tool to purchase and download games.
While the news is exciting, technology analysts are skeptic about the said Apple TV, adding that hard core gamers will be hard to convince since high-end gaming consoles from Microsoft and Sony, for example, are still better and ideal for games. However, Apple is going after the casual gamers, who find complex game controllers complicated, the report said.
