Suicide is a global phenomenon. More than 800,000 people die due to suicide every year, according to the WHO.

September is marked as suicide prevention month. It is an important month in terms of raising awareness about the issue, the causes behind suicide and telling people how this trend can be stopped.

Suicide is a global phenomenon and according to World Health Organization, more than 800,000 people die due to suicide every year. These numbers are just shocking and they do not include those people who attempt suicide. It means there are millions more who try to take their own lives but somehow were rescued and could not succeed in it.

Although people can commit suicide at any point of their life, the ratio is considerably high among youngsters. A global survey indicates that in 2012, suicide was the second leading cause of death among 15-29 year old youngsters.

A national level survey conducted by Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System in 2007 also suggests likewise. It reported that 14% of U.S. students seriously considered attempting suicide, 11% make a plan and 6.9 % make at least one suicide attempt.

According to the latest stats of Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is the 10th most common cause of death in United States and leads to 41,149 deaths every year.

A variety of studies have been conducted to determine the causes of suicide attempts. They found that there can be many factors that can put a person at a higher risk of attempting suicide including psychological disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, family history of violence and suicide and physical and mental illness.

Depression is one of the main reasons behind suicide. A latest survey suggests that in Taiwan around 13 million people suffer mental health problems and 13 percent of them attempt suicide.

If these issues are addressed properly, the suicide attempts can be prevented to a certain extent. Especially communication with family and friends, connectedness to spirituality and access to mental health care can contribute immensely in this regard.
