The child actress in ‘Our Gang’, Jean Darling passes away.The actress was 93 years old.
Jean Darling, the beautiful blond haired girl, who appeared in many of ‘Our Gang’ silent comedy shorts, has died. She started her career at age 4. Darling was also seen in the role of Carrie Pipperidge in the original cast of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s famed musical comedy Carousel.
The actress died this Friday suffering from a short illness at the age of 93. She died in a nursing facility in Roedermark, Germany. The news of her death was revealed to THR by her son, Roy.
Jean was born Dorothy Jean LaVake in Santa Monica. She had been spotted by an assistant of ‘Our Gang’ producer Hal Roach. Darling made her first appearance as the tyke named Jean in the 1927 silent Bring Home the Turkey. The actress left Our Gang series at the time sound was being introduced to the movies.
Darling has also been a part of Jane Eyre in 1934. She played the title character as a child. She has also appeared in Babes in Toyland with Laurel & Hardy. Darling made her Broadway debut in Count Me In opposite Jean Arthur in 1942. Then in 1945 she starred as Julie Jordan’s pal Carrie in the original cast of Carousel.

The actress married in 1954 to Reuben Bowen who was also known as the Magician. The couple moved to Dublin, Germany in 1974. From there Darling started to write mystery and crime stories for magazines. She also voiced a character named Aunty Poppy for RTE radio plays in Ireland. In 2012 the actress along with her son, Roy, moved to Rodgau, Germany.
