What most people don’t seem to remember is that this hazel eyed beauty was also the first African American woman to win the title of Miss America. Sitting down at an interview, Vanessa revealed what her feelings were back in 1983 when she won the title.
She said that as a 20 year old at the time, she was actually thinking about the foreign study trip she was planning. Her next thought was what she had to do from then on. She told GMA that as soon as she was off the stage, she was the media's.
Vanessa Williams said that she never realized the impact of her win until she was going across the country. There were African American women who thought they’d never see the day. They were crying and proud.
Things were also tough as there were many threats against her life at the time. She said that FBI has a special box the contained all the death threats against her. She had sharp shooters on buildings wherever she visited. She sat inside the car during parades but that was all part of the job.
The job got harder when Penthouse Magazine acquired to print the nude photos of then Miss America she had shot two years prior the competition. The magazine printed the photos and earned its top selling rate in history.
The scandal however landed Williams with a warning to hand in her title and resign or be dethroned forcefully. She resigned and gave up her title and took a four years hiatus from the entertainment world.
