The new Miss America has been crowned. It is Miss Georgia Betty Cantrell.
Betty Cantrell is the new Miss America 2016. She is the Miss Georgia. The 95th Miss America pageant was broadcasted on ABC last night.
The new Miss America will embark of a year long speaking tour to support her platform, Healthy Children, Strong America, and act as the official National Goodwill Ambassador for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.
Betty Cantrell studies at Mercer University. For the talent portion of the competition, Cantrell performed the operatic vocal performance of "Tu Tu Piccolo Iddio."
Cantrell beat first runner-up Miss Mississippi, Hannah Roberts and second runner-up Miss Colorado, Kelley Johnson.
The new Miss America 2016 is 21 years old and follows the footsteps of Kira Kazantsev. Her hometown is Warner Robins in Georgia. Her real first name is Baciliky. Her Greek and German parents named her after her Greek grandmother. The name means "Royalty."
She received the title of Miss Georgia in June. Cantrell grew up on a large farm and according to her Miss Georgia page she can drive a full-sized John Deere tractor, plow and seed fields, and handle a shotgun.
The most notably highlight of the Miss America 2016 pageant was the apology to Vanessa Williams. Back in 1983 Williams was crowned the first African American Miss America. In a scandal triggered by nude photos that got published by Penthouse, she was forced by the Miss America organization to give back her title.
Now 3 decades later the Miss America organization made a public apology to the famous singer and actress. Williams served as the head judge on this year's pageant. Which is a big sign that she has forgiven the organization.
