The new Apple News App has launched with the release of iOS 9 on Wednesday. Apple News publishers like I4U News are starting to see traffic growing rapidly, but it is not directly identifiable.
The new Apple News app has been released with iOS 9 on Wednesday. Traffic from the Apple News app has been increasing exponentially starting on release day. While we saw modest traffic on Wednesday with page-views of 3,000, the number jumped to 9,000 yesterday and today's stats are already matching that number. By end of day, referrals from the Apple News app should reach 20,000 page views.

The traffic is not directly identifiable in Google Analytics. Webmasters have to dig into the Browser property of Users. The Browser name Safari (in-app) is for the most part Apple News. Other apps can also open the in App Safari, so the numbers are not exact.
The Apple News Publisher app in the iCloud has no traffic statistics. The tool is still rather rudimentary. It would be nice if Apple could set the referrer information so webmasters can track the traffic coming from the Apple News app more accurately.
To no surprise, the best performing article topics on Apple News are Technology and Science.
The iOS 9 adoption has passed 20% according to this Mixpanel. As we already see sizable traffic from the Apple News App at this level, the News App seems to be shaping up as a major traffic source.

Whether Apple News is good or bad for publishers remains to be seen. We cannot break out advertising revenues yet for traffic coming from the News App and also have no tools from Apple to manage the content in anyway. Right now we just pipe in our news content via the RSS feed.
If you are using iOS 9 on your iPad or iPhone, select I4U News as one of your news sources.
