  • Apple reportedly in talks with California officials for developing self-driving car regulations

It is being said that Apple is close to launching an autonomous automobile.

Documents reveal that Mike Maletic, a senior legal counsel at Apple recently had an important meeting. He met with the department’s self-driving car experts on 17th August. These documents were obtained by the Guardian.

The car experts included Bernard Soriano, DMV deputy director and chief of strategic planning, Stephanie Dougherty. They are the co-sponsors of California’s autonomous vehicle regulation project.

These discussions took place as Google and Uber have advanced their plans to develop self-driving cars. Google even has a fleet of robot cars on the streets of California. The company is even planning to have several hundred built soon.

According to sources Apple has looked into booking a secure car testing site in California. Here Apple will is said to road-test its vehicle. The vehicle is codenamed Project Titan.

California’s DMV is currently developing regulations for the deployment of these autonomous vehicles. These regulations will establish requirements that manufacturers will have to meet.

The carmakers will have to do this to certify that their vehicles have been successfully tested. These regulations will also see to that the vehicles are ready for consumers to operate. The DMV had to draft these rules by the start of 2015.

But as we can see they are running late. Many carmakers such as General Motors, Nissan and Google have been involved with the process. Soriano stated that once the rules get made they can be used National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
