The supermoon eclipse fascinated skygazers on a global level. It was indeed a sight to see in all its glory.

This was the first supermoon eclipse in more than 30 years and it fulfilled the dreams of the stargazers beyond saturation point. The shadow of the earth eclipsed the moon and it was a rare sight indeed.

The moment was on Sunday evening and everyone was poised with his or her binoculars and telescope. The blood red moon shone in the night sky and then got covered with a gloomy shade as the earth came in alignment with it.

The rubicund color of the moon was truly a beautiful view that brought joy into the life of many a gazer and in most places the sky was clear so viewing the lunar eclipse was not a problem. The last time such a rare phenomenon occurred was in 1982.

As for the next time it will recur, that will be in 2033. Over a billion people saw the eclipse in Europe, Africa and Asia. The images of the moon receding behind the shadows were drop dead gorgeous to behold. They almost seemed magical in their nature and were totally out of this world.

The blood moon picture was almost suggestive of the Death Star. The coincidence of the supermoon with a lunar eclipse was a “once in a blue moon” thing (pun intended).

The only difference was that this time it was a blood moon instead of any other color. The celestial event was observed on a partial basis by several people in various parts of the world. The moon was 7-8% larger than usual. As for its exact hue it was russet or rusty in nature. This was due to the scattering of light at the particular time when the moon was visible in the sky.

The constellation in front of which the blood moon stationed itself was Pisces or The Fish. Everybody knows that in case of a total lunar eclipse, the sun, moon and earth are perfectly situated in front of each other in total alignment.

That is the situation that gives rise to the phenomenon in the first place. As for the supermoon, it becomes a fact when earth’s satellite planetoid is at its perigee or closest to our planet’s surface. Whereas at its apogee, it is 405,000 km away, at its perigee, it is 363,000 km away from spaceship earth.
