Facebook Is Down (Update)

Facebook is Down

The Facebook Service is unavailable world wide. A billion people do not know what to do.

Facebook suffers another outage. A billion Facebook users cannot post what they are doing right now. It is pure hell.

Update 4:45pm: Facebook is back online after a 45 minute outage.

When trying to connect to Facebook a really barebones error message appears. The simple words "Service Unavailable" stand there on a completely white page.

Such a meltdown is costing Facebook a ton of money. Users need psychological help. Here is our free advice. If it is before noon at your location, go grab a coffee. When you are back, Facebook is likely to be back online. If it is after noon, go grab a beer. If you come back and Facebook is still down, go grab another one, and so on.

I wonder if a Facebook outage is still a concern to Mark Zuckerberg. Is he getting down into the trenches if something like this happens? Or is he just letting the IT guys handle it?

Facebook has been down since around 3pm ET. This is already half an hour. An outage that long means that something seriously went wrong. Some kind of chain reaction in the DNS or other critical infrastructure.

Facebook is not using Twitter to update on the outage. It would be actually a smart thing to do. It is all about managing expectations. The Facebook account on Twitter has close to 14 million followers. The pinned Tweet is the one from August when Facebook announced 1 billion users online on a single day.

The biggest social network has had a bit of a rough time lately. Today's outage marks the third this month.
