The film has earned higher than the studio expected in its opening week. Goosebumps had a box office debut of an estimated $23.5 million over the weekend. The film is adapted from the famous R.L. Stine's books of the same name.
According to the Sony chief Rory Bruer they had a ball making the movie. Bruer believes the fun they had while making Goosebumps translated onto the screen. The marketing team at Sony were aiming to make Goosebumps look like a film different from other Halloween films.
Apparently families received the message Goosebumps is not a typical Halloween film. But the arrival of Halloween two weeks after Goosebumps release did add a feeling of the festivities. The horror film stars Jack Black as the writer R.L. Stine in the film.
“It’s like a literal traffic jam on the freeway and everyone is just jockeying for position,” Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak, told Variety . “Every weekend it seems like four new movies are opening and there’s a cumulative effect of adding movie after movie. The box office pie can only be split so many ways.”
Former box office leader ‘The Martian’ has descended to the second spot on the box office. ‘The Martian’ may have lost the top but is still going strong with earnings of $21.5 million. While Goosebumps have retained the top spot despite two new releases, the 'Bridge of Spies' and 'Crimson Peak'.
‘Bridge of Spies’ currently hold the 3rd spot on the box office while grossing $15.4 million. The drama thriller starring Tom Hanks is directed by Steven Spielberg and is slated to impress at the awards. Another horror film ‘Crimson Peak’ had a less than expected box office debut. The R-rated film only earned an estimated $12.8 million.
“This is a challenging play time for adult-oriented films,” said Nick Carpou, Universal’s domestic distribution chief. “The film is definitely a throwback to an old-fashioned way of creating atmosphere and layering tension. It’s visually stunning and genuinely creepy.”
