Lamar Odom’s kidneys are not recovering as anticipated and he is receiving dialysis everyday which will eventually lead to a kidney transplant.
Lamar Odom is recovering. That is a statement his family has propagated with high hopes and happiness. He was transferred by air to the L.A.'s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas on Monday.
The reason for this transfer has been to give Lamar better care and rehabilitation facilities. His family released a statement stating that Lamar is beginning a new chapter in his road to recovery. Please continue to uplift him and the family in prayer, he continues to make miraculous progress, taking a few steps in Los Angeles.
They said that they couldn't be more overjoyed! We realize Lamar's continued improvement will not be easy, however his unrelenting strength and faith in God will pull him through.
That said the doctors have revealed that the stroke caused his organs to shut down. His lungs needed ventilators to function, his heart revived and his kidneys did fail on his third day.
The former NBA player had to go through dialysis to keep his kidneys going, according to TMZ. The organs have been getting better but his kidneys are not. The doctors say that his kidneys never recovered. Even though Lamar is fighting through his ordeal, he even took some steps and breathing on his own.
His kidneys seems to be failing and doctors have him on six hours of dialysis. Dr. Victor Gura, Kidney Specialist and Attending Physician at Cedars Sinai said that dialysis helps when the accumulation of toxic waste and excess water is life threatening.
If the kidneys are not excreting these substances because they were injured and not functioning, then they are not making urine to get rid of toxins, excess salt and water and these have to be removed using dialysis with an artificial kidney.
The ultimate step would be for Odom to have a kidney transplant. The possibility of the surgery is very much in play.
