Pork and human DNA has been found in many vegetarian hot dog brands, report suggests.

Your favorite street food may have something you had never thought of.

According to Clear Food’s latest report, 345 hot dog samples from 75 different brands have been analyzed and 14.4 percent were found to be ‘problematic’ in one way or the other. The problems varied from hygiene issues to the absence of labeled ingredients to unexpected substitutions.

Researchers were surprised to find that many of the hot dogs, labeled as vegetarian, had traces of meat in them, while some other that were supposed to have chicken and turkey sausages, had pork instead. To the surprise of many, even human DNA was found in some of the samples.

Americans are a hot dog hungry nation and they are so obsessed with the food that they hardly try to think about what is inside them. According to National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans spent $2.5 billion on hot dogs and $2.74 billion on dinner sausages in 2014. A total of three million hot dogs were eaten last season.

Clear Food examined the hot dog samples at a molecular level, ingredient by ingredient. Their aim is to make people clear and confident about what they are eating and presenting in front of their guests.

But not all the hot dog brands are lying about their products. Despite the issues, it has been found that many brands were also making high-quality hot dogs. Clear Food website has also mentioned the names of those top specialty and regional hot dog brands that scored 90 or more in the test. The top 10 brands can be viewed on their website.

Scores were given after analyzing DNA frequency and then on the basis of nutrition - content accuracy such as the quantity of carbs, fat and calories.

“Despite the problems we found, what was most promising in our tests was the fact that there are a number of hot dog manufacturers, large and small, that are producing high-quality hot dogs with integrity. These products were not limited to organic producers or high-end specialty brands – products across a variety of price points scored well.” Report concludes.
