This is the next generation of candidates that will fill in slots that are being vacated by the good old guys. In the place of the golden oldsters will come the hot-blooded youngsters. It was time NASA received a fresh dose of rejuvenating youthfulness among its ranks.
“This next group of American space explorers will inspire the Mars generation to reach for new heights, and help us realize the goal of putting boot prints on the Red Planet,” said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.
“Those selected for this service will fly on U.S. made spacecraft from American soil, advance critical science and research aboard the International Space Station, and help push the boundaries of technology in the proving ground of deep space.”

However, this is not a form of child’s play. Space exploration has billions of dollars in investment behind it so the worthy candidates that do get selected will be the cream of the crop. Up until now, only 300 elite class individuals have become astronauts.
The road that leads to outer space is littered with the broken spirits of those who could have made it to astronaut-hood but stopped short of fitting the bill. The lucky people who get to become astronauts must be degree holders. And that does not mean any old degree.
It must be an advanced diploma in engineering, biology, physics or mathematics. That means a master’s degree or a doctorate. And that takes a lot of brainstorming to accomplish in today’s education-saturated world.
Then there is the condition of being eagle-eyed. The vision of the candidates must be perfect. Any myopia will cost the aspirants the job. The height parameters are set too. It is somewhere between five to six feet. And a three year stint at a firm is mandatory.
With so many criteria to fulfill, the number of folks who do make the grade are narrowed down to a minimal amount. If the candidates pass the interviews and medical tests, then they will still have to undergo two years of intense training.
