Johnny Depp has come quite a long way in the last two decades. While he was once known as a crazy talented actor who could disappear into any character - he is now known for taking a paycheck for big name roles like Captain Jack Sparrow. The actor that we once couldn't believe hadn't won an Oscar is now taking an all too familiar path with his fame. After separating from his long time love and moving on with a younger actress, the superstar is now trying to get back on track with a serious movie entitled Black Mass.

As such, he is doing quite a bit of press for this one, and he came out and talked with People Magazine about the time he was almost fired:

“They wanted to fire me,” Depp recalled while speaking at AFI Fest 2015, saying that studio executives didn’t quite understand the version of the character he had created. “I remember it trickled back to me that [former Disney CEO] Michael Eisner went on some sort of vent about how, ‘Goddammit, Johnny Depp’s ruining the film. What is it? What is that thing? Is it drunk? Is it gay?’ So I fully expected to be fired.”

In fact, another executive had to call Depp and ask him about his now iconic Captain Jack Sparrow - the character that single handedly made the billion dollar series what it is.

“I said, well, didn’t you know that all my characters are gay?” he explained. “I was really expecting to be fired. But they wouldn’t for some reason. They were actually going to subtitle my character – they couldn’t understand Captain Jack,” he says of the role, which eventually nabbed Depp his first Best Actor Oscar nomination.
