A face-like formation was spotted on the surface of Mars. This is however probably just the wild and woolly imagination of UFO enthusiasts which has run amok.
Some thought there were remains of an alien on the planet. Others mistook another rocky formation for an enigmatic female in a dress. Yet the latest find is a pagan deity on Mars. The rock on the Red Planet looks like a face taken from a tome on archaeology.
The physiognomy was revealed in all its glory on Monday. The image reached us from NASA’s Mars Opportunity Rover. You have to use your fantasizing power to make the formation resemble a sculpture in a museum. But that is what it actually looks like.
The formation has a striking resemblance to Nabu, a god of wisdom among the Neo-Assyrians. Why, it even looks like a ditto copy of the winged lion statue. And then there are those who match the image to that of a monarch.
It all depends upon perspective and a little extra power to envision alternative patterns in ordinary things. several conspiracy theories have been spawned as a result and they are doing the rounds.
Some say that the ancient Assyrians developed space travel and left a dilapidated statue of their god somewhere among the rubble. Say what you like but the image does indeed bear an uncanny resemblance to the ancient god of the Assyrians. But then Occam’s Razor comes to the rescue.
It is simply a rock although it has a nifty pattern emblazoned on its surface. The Red Planet is an interesting place alright especially for us humans with our anthropomorphic biases. This search for human faces among the dust and rocks is just another example of mankind finding meaning where there is none.
This “Face on Mars” was brought to light by the website UFO Sightings Daily. There are similar things to be seen on earth such as finding words from a literary text among the light chinks seen from amidst forest foliage. And images of ancient figures such as Homer and Aesop have been found in the markings on burnt toast.

Even the random scattering of droplets on a washroom floor have inspired many to declare them to resemble everything from brand logos to human anatomy. It all lies in the creative abilities of mankind to find patterns and heuristics where none exist in the first place. This is our strength and it is also our weakness.
