Food psychology says that males tend to overeat when they are with females. This trend has been consistently seen in the menfolk.

If you happen to be a male member of the species, then your eating habits are dependent on female company. Yes, you heard that one right, males tend to binge in the presence of the fair sex. This is very natural.

And it has nothing to do with the set point or appetite thermostat of the males in question. A study at Cornell University, published in the journal Evolutionary Psychological Science, shows that males don’t eat as much when with other males. But throw in a female and they will eat till their shirt buttons pop out.

Over 105 adults were monitored for the experiment. They dined at an all-you-can-eat Italian buffet for a period of a fortnight. The pizza slices and salad bowls that got gobbled per diner were noted down with care and scrupulosity. And the presence of males or females in the vicinity of the gormandizers was observed too.

The attitudes of the diners were recorded via a questionnaire they were given to fill out towards the end of the hearty meal. Those men who dined in the company of a single female ate 92% more pizza and 86% more salad than other men who sat among their male buddies.

As for the women, their hunger levels remained constant whether they were with other females or males. However, when they were with the males, many females reported feeling nauseous and in a hurry.

Thus the male of the species tends to eat in a blustering manner. He wants to show off how many cheeseburgers or hot dogs he ate while in female company. The saying that the way to a man’s heart lies through his stomach holds true here.

The trend has also been seen in eating competitions where the males will act like vacuum cleaners around the tons of food items in an effort to show off or flex their hungry Alpha-male caveman muscles.

Almost all the participants of eating competitions happen to be males. This is a significant find alright. The participants in the experiment ranged from teenagers to senior citizens. They all showed the same pattern of behavior.

The male of the species is indeed given to overt and exhibitionistic behavior. And a previous study proves that females actually are light eaters in the company of men. But more evidence is needed to corroborate that finding.
