A widely cited study is ranking the Groupon Black Friday 2015 sale has the sale with the highest savings, but what does that mean?
Black Friday is all about steep discounts or is it? As reported yesterday, Wallet Hub released a study analyzing 8,000 Black Friday advertised by 30 stores. The study ranks the stores with the highest discounts in the major product categories. Overall JCPenney offers the highest average discount with 68%, followed by Kohl's with 66.7% and Stage with 63.9%. Groupon ranks 4th overall with 63.9%.

Groupon is ranking #1 for highest average discount in Consumer Electronics. The average discount on Groupon Black Friday 2015 deals is 63.43% according to Wallet Hub's report. What does this mean? Best Buy, Amazon, Target and Walmart are not under the top 5 in consumer electronics. Why are deals from these retailers topping our consumer electronics deals charts then?
Let's take a look at the Groupon Black Friday 2015 Ad to find out. The Groupon Black Friday 2015 flyer is not official yet, but leaked a couple days ago on Black Friday sites. There are indeed consumer electronics deals advertised with 50%, 60%, 65% and even 75% off. The mix of offered items is though very different than on say a Best Buy Black Friday ad or Walmart Black Friday ad.
The Groupon Black Friday 2015 Ad features steep discounts on low value items like 65% off an Apple 3.3ft. Lightning Cable or 60% off Apple EarPods. The latter deal is already sold out. There are also deals on high value consumer electronics like Samsung TVs and Apple iPads. The iPad is for instance up to 65% off, but the sale includes outdated models like the iPad 2. The discount on the new models is not 65%.
Groupon advertise 2 TV deals in their Black Friday 2015 Ad. Best Buy Black Friday flyer has well over 20 TV deals. Alone for this fact, the ranking of Groupon as place with the highest savings on Black Friday is unfair. Let's take as last point the Groupon TV deals and compare them with what Best Buy offers.
Groupon lists a 55-inch Samsung UN55J5300AFXZP 1080p 60Hz LED Smart TV in the ad. The deal is available now and priced at $699.99, with savings over 60%. This Samsung TV model is not sold anywhere else. We found a Samsung UN55J6200 TV model with similar specs advertised for $578 by hhgregg and Sears for Black Friday. The Groupon deal is a solid deal, but not unique and a similar Samsung TV sells for less.
The second Groupon Black Friday TV deals is on the 40-inch Samsung UN40JU6100FXZP 4K UHD Smart TV, selling for $499.99, saving 50%. This model is also apparently only available through Groupon. A similar Samsung TV (UN40JU6400) will be offered for $448 again by hhgregg for only $448.
I don't want to make the Groupon Black Friday deals bad, they are not. They offer great deals, they are just not better than the big retailers on Black Friday. Savings cannot be compared easily when the products offered are completely different. Wallet Hub says that they the average discount was weighted based on the pre-discounted price of the item in order to give more credit to the retailers. I believe in case of Groupon that weighing was not enough to counter the unusual consumer electronics product selection of low-value item like cables and high discounts on outdated products like the iPad 2.
