The last installment of the Hunger Games franchise is expected to debut with a $120 million opening making it this year’s fourth highest opener.
The bows are drawn, the rebellion is up and the cast is fell swooping for one last time. The final part of the Hunger Games phenomenon will open this week with high expectations. The first three installments brought in a whopping $2.3 billion worldwide.
The first two parts, Catching Fire and The Hunger Games clock in as the eighth and ninth biggest domestic debuts of all time, with $158.1 million and $152.5 million apiece. It made Catching Fire the biggest opening ever for a movie with a female lead.
The third part of the franchise, Mockingjay Part 1 saw a dip in viewership. It brought in $121.9 million in its debut. It went on to gross $337.1 million domestically and $755.4 million worldwide. The earnings were considerably low keeping the earnings of Catching Fire in mind.
That is why the studios are not setting high expectations with the latest installment. They are keeping their fingers crossed for the $120 million mark that the third part made to knock of Minions from the fourth spot to make the biggest debut week this year. The studios and theaters are hoping that the finality of the series will bring in more viewers out to bid their farewell to the series.
Mockingjay Part 2 has a gross budget of $160 million, according to EW. The film received positive critical reviews which have been generally better than last year’s installment. However, it still has not been as overwhelmingly positive as the first two films. It currently holds a 72 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Francis Lawrence returns to direct the final installment in Suzanne Collins’ YA saga after helming Catching Fire and Mockingjay Part 1. The latest part stars its original cast with stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Donald Sutherland and Julianne Moore.
