Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 managed to open to $101 million in the North America, making it the lowest grossing movie in the entire franchise.
Mockingjay 2 was the last movie in the Hunger Games franchise and while many people including the Lionsgate’s management, thought that the franchise’s last part would go out with a bang, it did not. The last part in the franchise was anticipated to pass the $120 million mark set by the previous Mockingjay movie.

Although the movie had earned lower than the first two parts, Mockingjay 2 was expected to receive some extra business considering it was the last part in the franchise and like Harry Potter franchise, it expected a lot of fans to come and say good bye.
The movie did not do so well and only earned a net total of $101 million, according to THR. The movie boasted the biggest day-and-date release of the year to date and the widest in Lionsgate's history.
It opened No. 1 in 81 markets, led by the U.K. with $17.1 million, followed by China, Germany ($14.4 million), Mexico ($8.7 million) and France ($7.1 million), where it wasn't that far behind the $10 million debut of Mockingjay 1 and Australia and Brazil followed with $6.8 million each, while Russia turned in $6.7 million.
Considering the entire franchise, the whole Hunger Games experience is a success story with the earnings of the latest movie boasting over a billion dollars earnings for the franchise and the studio. It was the first time ever for a female led franchise to earn so high in the world and Jennifer Lawrence became the most identified name in the world.
The critics were true to their opinions about the movie as it was for the books. Suzanne Collins last book didn’t curry much favor after her first two books and many are questioning whether the last part should have been divided into two parts like the earlier franchises like Harry Potter and Twilight saga had.
Even with a stellar, award winning cast including Jennifer Lawrence, heartthrob Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Donald Sutherland as iconis President Snow, Woody Harrelson, Julianne Moore, late David Seymour Hoffman, Sam Claffin and Jena Malone could not attract the audience to this politically fuelled rebellion.
