The movie is based on the Nathaniel Philbrick’s book about the true story of the whaling ship Essex and its crew’s 1820 encounter with a massive sperm whale. The book later inspired Herman Melville to write his bestselling ‘Moby Dick’.
The movie stars Chris Hemsworth as First Mate Owen Chase, Cilian Murphy, Benjamin Walker, Brendon Gleeson and more as the crew of Essex. The movie is about the ship crew’s encounter with a sperm whale after which they are stranded in the ocean for their survival.
Ron Howard is said to have gotten over his fear of the ocean for the movie. The movie had a huge budget for shooting the movie’s extensive sequences and oceanic scenes.
The movie however opened to dismal reviews and earnings in theatres across Amercia. Grossing a net worth of $11 million against its $100 million budget is a sinking loss for the distributing company Warner Bros.
The movie’s loss was defended by Jeff Goldstein, domestic distribution head for Warner Bros. He said that Ron Howard was very passionate about the project and they are proud to have done the film with him.

One film’s loss is another’s gain. Heart of the Sea was the only new release this weekend. Its failure at the box office gave way to Hunger Games: Mockingjay 2 to dominate its fourth weekend. Mockingjay is the third movie to top the fourth consecutive weekend this year after Furious 7 and The Martian.
In the Heart of the Sea is still hopeful to carry through to a greater weekend during Christmas. It is still a very doubtful scenario seeing the Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Sisters will be opening this weekend. So Heart of the Sea might become another Warner Bros. loss this year.
According to EW, this weekend’s top five movies at the box office are:
1. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 — 11.3 million
2. In the Heart of the Sea — $11 million
3. The Good Dinosaur — $10.5 million
4. Creed — $10.1 million
5. Krampus — $8 million
