  • The Western Sucrose-Heavy Diet is responsible for Several Types of Cancers

It has been found that the western sucrose-heavy diet is responsible for several types of cancers.

High amounts of sugar in the western diet may cause breast cancer and metastasis that reaches the lungs. A study at the University of Texas proved this point without a shadow of a doubt.

Sugar in the diet had a marked effect on the enzymatic signaling pathway known as 12-LOX. When lab mice were fed a sugar-laden diet they developed tumors and metastasis. This was in contrast to a starchy diet without any sugar in it.

The findings of this study are published today in an online issue of Cancer Research.

The reason behind the harmful effect of dietary sucrose was expression of 12-LOX and 12-HETE. 12-HETE is a related fatty acid. Since sugar causes inflammation, it also may lead to the development of cancer later on.

The sugar intake led to breast tumors in mice. Many mechanisms were involved in the pathogenesis of cancer. Among the culprits that gave rise to the wild cancerous cells were the fructose found in table sugar and high fructose corn syrup. The second ingredient is virtually found in all supermarket processed food.

"We found that sucrose intake in mice comparable to levels of Western diets led to increased tumor growth and metastasis, when compared to a non-sugar starch diet," said Peiying Yang, Ph.D., assistant professor of Palliative, Rehabilitation, and Integrative Medicine.

"This was due, in part, to increased expression of 12-LOX and a related fatty acid called 12-HETE."

The role of the sugar is insidious. Breast cancer risks are a major issue that needs to be tackled. Moderation in the consumption of sugar is a must for health to flourish among the citizens of the US.

Over hundred pounds of sugar is normally consumed per person in the United States annually. This is a very large amount and literally poisons the bodies of the consumers. The biggest contributers to this sugar-heavy dietary pattern are all the sugary beverages that are sold in the market. Almost everything has sugar as an ingredient. The postmodern triad of obesity, heart disease and cancer is linked to the oveconsumption of sugar on a regular basis.

Glucose is another type of sugar that is a suspect. It is required by the brain though. And the energy-based metabolic pathways are also responsible for some of the symptoms of cancer.

The inflammatory response and the spread of carcinogenesis may be one and the same thing. They only have different names though. Mice were divided into groups.

They were given four different diets. 30% of those on a starchy diet had measurable tumors at six months of age. However, 50% to 58% of the mice on a high sugar diet developed breast tumors. Also those mice that were on a fructose or sucrose diet had more lung metastasis than those mice that were on a starchy diet.

"This study suggests that dietary sucrose or fructose induced 12-LOX and 12-HETE production in breast tumor cells in vivo," said Cohen. "This indicates a possible signaling pathway responsible for sugar-promoted tumor growth in mice. How dietary sucrose and fructose induces 12-HETE and whether it has a direct or indirect effect remains in question."
