Over the past six years we have seen the residents of Downton at the brink of entering the 20th century and all the drama that goes on in the lives of the owners as well as the help and all the people associated with the great mansion.
As the sixth and final season of the show premieres, many questions about the show have risen as previous characters have moved on, some have passed and others have been added to the line-up.
Gareth Neame was able to shed some light on what is to be expected from this season with the storyline and the characters that we have supported and the relationships that we have shipped for the previous five years.
According to Gareth, the threat facing the family as the time changes would be the selling of the nearby estate. The sale bring Robert Crawley face to face with the reality of changing times and how they become more and more incapable of handling the estate despite Mary assurance that she can keep the estate as majestic as ever.
The bridge between the old and the new and the man’s opinion and woman’s opinion will be focused on once more and we’ll have to see whether it is finally crossed or not.
As far a Mary being blackmailed by Rita Bevan is in question, Gareth told EW that they don’t want the story to be solely focused on blackmail. It will be a one-time thing, it will happen and it will end.
Mary’s stance in the face of blackmail is something to be appreciated. Mary’s and Edith’s trajectory as developing free thinking women will also come to fruition.
As Mary takes her stance in handling the estate and Edith, despite facing so many difficulties is handling her own newspaper and she is on her way to become a businesswoman.
The romantic and comedic parts will be there as well. According to Neame, Fellowes adds comedic touches situation and scene wise. It offers a great opportunity to add a gag here and there. He also praised the actors for being able to handle the comedic parts and acting them out brilliantly.
Moreover, the romantic side is also sure to flourish this season. As Mr. Bates and Anna finally get evicted from Mr. Green’s murder trial. After all the hurdles these too have crossed, they only seem to get stronger and better.
So does Carson and Mrs. Hughes, despite their ages and their status, have grown more and more intimate and the relationship has developed in front of our eyes into something beautiful.
