Hubble Captures Stunning Merging of Two Galaxies

Two separate galaxies have been gradually drawn together by gravity and will collide eventually to form a new galaxy.

NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has captured an incredible image of two galaxies merging. 

The bright and colorful image shows galaxy NGC 6052, which is located around 230 million light years away from the Earth, on the verge of colliding with another giant galaxy.

According to NASA, these two separate galaxies are drawn closer to each other gradually due to gravity and they will eventually collide to form a single, giant new galaxy. 

Galaxy NGC 6052 is a galaxy with a very unusual structure. In fact, the galaxy itself is a result of a galactic collision.

“It would be reasonable to think of this as a single abnormal galaxy, and it was originally classified as such. However, it’s a fact a “new” galaxy is in the process of forming.” NASA/ESA wrote in the description of the image.

The image shows that the stars of both galaxies are thrown out of their original orbits. They are being dragged by gravity and will be placed on to entirely new paths as the merging process goes on.

The newly formed ‘galaxy’ is having a ‘highly chaotic shape’ right now. But it will settle down into a stable shape eventually and will not resemble with either of the two original galaxies. 

The image was taken by Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 which is Hubble’s workhorse camera for many years. The camera has a spectacular ability to capture image at various ranges from far-ultraviolent to visible to near- infrared wavelengths.
