My prediction of the Oculus Rift came in $100 too low. The Oculus Rift is on pre-order for $599 since yesterday and is already out of stock until June.
Facebook's Oculus finally started the pre-order for the Oculus Rift on Jan. 6 amidst an outcry of a lot of fans about the high price. The demand is outstripping supply. If you order the Rift now, you will get the virtual reality goggles in June. The first Oculus Rift will ship on March 28. The shipping date slipped by three month just within 24 hours of the pre-order availability.

Palmer Luckey had a rough day that ended well after midnight. He just reacted on Twitter one more time to the haters: "Last thought of the day: Remember when many were certain Facebook would turn the Rift into a low-end casual machine? Or abandon gamers? Instead, we turned it into the best VR headset possible, with a strong library of games through both Oculus Studios and 3rd parties. It is impossible to make everyone happy, but Oculus will always do what makes VR successful in the long run, at the high end and low end."
January 6 should have been a day to celebrate a not about a discussion about the $599 price-tag of the Rift. In the end Oculus has created this by keeping the price secret and communicating it wrong all the time.
continuation of orginal story:
This fact alone should shut up the complainers that charged at Oculus for the price-tag of $599, that is considered too high. Oculus founder Palmer Luckey said on Twitter that Oculus is not making any money on the Rift. I have predicted the price to be $499 and I'm not surprised that its $599. This is a high-end device and you also get a bunch of accessories with it.
Besides the Rift with built-in headphones and mic, the box contains a Wireless Xbox One controller, the Oculus Remote and a Sensor.
The $599 is also just one part of cost that the whole solution will cost. A Oculus ready Windows PC will cost about $1,000. Palmer said that Rift+PC bundles are starting at $1499, which sounds actually like a bargain.
My biggest issue with Oculus is that it does not run on an Apple Mac. I have no intention to go back and get me a Windows box again. It is over. Let's see how long I can stay strong. Oculus is definitely the only reason to get a Windows PC that I can think of.

Oculus has paused the Mac development last summer. Older Oculus SDKs had Mac OS X support. So there is a chance that Oculus will eventually offer an OS X version. The presence of the Xbox One controller in the bundle is an indicator that Oculus is very cozy with Microsoft, which likely means a Mac version is not in the very near future.
