  • Netflix Goes Around the World at CES 2016!

The streaming service announced it has gone live in nearly every country in the world.

Netflix just announced its expansion plan at the CES 2016. Netflix announced it has added 130 additional countries to the list of its users. Meaning Netflix is now live in nearly every country of the world.

Services for the additional 130 countries have already been switched on by Netflix. Netflix shared that it is still trying to expand in just a select number of countries. The countries include China, North Korea, Syria and Crimea.

In the latter three, Netflix is banned from operating due to US law. One point to note is the fact Netflix will still only be available in urban areas. Some countries do not have long range internet access therefore Netflix availability is still limited.

The global expansion announcement was made by Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings. The announcement took place during Hastings’ keynote speech at the CES tech show in Las Vegas.

Hastings also revealed HDR (high dynamic range) content will be offered by Netflix in the coming year. Hastings also stated they are currently talking with the Chinese officials regarding their expansion.

But Hastings also committed for Netflix to reach China officially it would take some time. China is a very large country and Netflix wants the billion Chinese to get access to their content.

However in China specific permission is required from the government to operate. Netflix is ready to work with the demands of China and will patiently wait.

As a result of the announcement at CES 2016, the shares of Netflix have risen a significant 9 percent. According to tech consultancy Gartner, they expected Netflix to go live everywhere.

But the announcement has happened more quickly than anyone was expecting. Netflix had only been carrying out its expansion in phased stages.

As part of the expansion Netflix has even added Korean, Chinese and Arabic to the list of supported languages. The addition has taken the total number of languages offered to 21.

Where is Netflix available?

Following Netflix’s announcement LG also revealed both of them are partnering. LG announced it has initiated a global partnership with Netflix to facilitate the expansion. LG will help Netflix to expand its global on-demand Internet streaming operations.

The expansion will occur in undeveloped world markets. The expansion will bring an extensive library of high-quality content to Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

The content provided by Netflix will also include 4K HDR-mastered original TV series. Netflix and LG will also combine efforts to provide prepaid access to the Netflix service. LG will contribute its superior picture quality and performance to bring the best viewing with Netflix.

The HDR or High dynamic range video allows TVs to display a wider dynamic range. Millions of more colors in added shades of brightness are shown.

The impact will be greater than jumping from 1080p to 4K ultra-high definition. According to Hastings the HDR viewing will be a visceral sensation which is pretty amazing.

A first look at some Netflix’s new and coming show shows was also provided to the audience. Some of the shows include ‘The Crown’ which is a biopic of Queen Elizabeth II.

Another show is a musical drama about New York's disco scene called ‘The Get Down’. Hastings also revealed as of now in 2016 Netflix is streaming 125 million hours a day of entertainment.

“Our global partnership with LG will help entertainment lovers worldwide discover and enjoy Netflix,” said Scott Mirer, vice president of device partner ecosystem at Netflix. “We look forward to delighting our members with cutting edge technology and the ability to watch their favorite series in 4K and HDR.”

“We are excited to be the global business partner of the world’s most popular content provider Netflix,” said Brian Kwon, President and CEO at LG’s Home Entertainment Company.

“From our side, LG will continue its dedication to innovating display and audio technologies in order to offer global consumers a superior 4K and HDR viewing experience. By adopting the most promising cutting-edge technological advancements, LG will continue to lead in the global premium TV market.”
