Everyone dreams about hitting the lottery and winning enough money to take care of themselves and everyone around them. This weekend, that dream could come true for some people. The Powerball jackpot for this Saturday, January 9 is now at an estimated $700 million and some speculate that number could creep even higher by the time the drawing happens.

The historic prize, which would be the largest ever, rose from the Wednesday, January 6 drawing, when that evening’s drawing of $524 million wasn't able to produce a matching ticket. The winning numbers were 2, 11, 47, 62, 63, with Powerball 17.
The Powerball has been steadily increasing since November, and will likely keep increasing unless someone wins.
This time around, the final payout for the $700 million jackpot will depend on the winner’s tax rate, as well as both the state and local taxes where they live, according to ABC News.
The last time the Powerball jackpot was anywhere near this ($656), three winners in three different states split the payout.
If you are looking to purchase a Powerball ticket, you should know that the luckiest state in producing winners has been Pennsylvania, where 16 people have won the Powerball since 2003. However, 44 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands all play as well.
Unfortunately, the odds of winning the jackpot are, well, extremely unlikely and that number is growing even more as people who don't usually play pick up a ticket — 1 in 292.2 million.
Still, at $2 a pop, it might be worth it to pick up a few.
