Breaking news. Legendary British artist David Bowie died according to Facebook post, but it could be a hoax. Update. It is confirmed that David Bowie has died.

Has legendary British artist David Bowie died? Media is scrambling to confirm the news. A Facebook post on the David Bowie page says he did.

The post reads: "David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief."

Updated: Initially, it was not clear if the breaking news was a hoax, but it has now been confirmed that David Bowie has died. 

The announcement has been made not only on Facebook, but also on Twitter and the official David Bowie site. Now David Bowie's son Duncan Jones has confirmed that his dad died on Twitter as well, ending the guessing. See his post below.

The 69 year old has supposed been rumored to suffer from cancer. The artist has been a star since the seventies. Songs like Space Oddity and Life on Mars will stay in the world's music mind forever.

David Bowie has just released a new album on January 8 titled Black Star. If indeed David Bowie died, the album gets a completely a new meaning. Black Star album has been already the best-selling album on iTunes and Amazon in the UK and it's the second best-selling album on iTunes and Amazon in the USA.

David Bowie celebrated his 69th birthday on January 8, 2016. David Bowie, born as David Robert Jones in 1947 was a unique multi-talented artist. His career included creating androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust. His creative legacy will forever influence music.
