According to the press release from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Phillip's body was found in the early hours on Wednesday, January 13, 2016. Officials suspect that he committed suicide.
The ex-football star was in solitary confinement since September 1 after he was charged with first degree murder in the death of his cellmate, 37-year-old Damion Soward in April, according to US Weekly.
Phillips was in contact with his mother, and his letters showed that he was frustrated with his cellmate in the days leading up to Soward's death.
“I feel myself very close to snapping,” he wrote in a letter dated March 5, 2015. “My anger grows daily as I have become fed up with prison. I feel my anger is near bursting and that will result in my death or the death of someone else.”
Phillips was sitting out a 31-year sentence that came from his August 2005 arrest for driving a car into three teenagers and choking his girlfriend on two occasions.
