Elon Musk is not a stranger to auto, energy and space enthusiasts because he is a multi-billionaire with his fingers in the automotive, energy and space industries; he owns Tesla motors which produces electric and self-driving cars, SolarCity which is an energy supply company, and SpaceX which is a company that launches rockets and other payloads into orbit outside Earth.

He recently revealed at a private interview with BBC correspondents at his design studio close to LA that he is aware of the fact that Apple is making its own electric cars, and that "It's pretty hard to hide something if you hire over a thousand engineers to do it."

His electric auto company competes with Nissan and BMW among others in producing and marketing high-end electric cars, and now Apple is rumored to have joined the fray. Apple has not confirmed this development, but there is no denying the fact that it recently registered apple.car and apple.auto among other automobile-related internet domains.

"Tesla will still aspire to make the most compelling electric vehicles, and that would be our goal, while at the same time helping other companies to make electric cars as well," Musk said. "It will expand the industry."

Meanwhile, the Tesla boss noted that it will only be a matter of time before owners are able to summon their electric and autonomous cars via their smartphones; and that driving a car would only become a hobby and never a necessity.

Musk disclosed that Tesla’s current Summon car version is able to locate its owner on any private property, and that with time, the car will be able to leave its garage and lock up behind itself to locate its owner where he is. This won’t be a miracle for the future, but possible within a couple of years away.

"This is the first baby step - ultimately you'll be able to summon the car from New York if you're living in LA, and it will drive across the country, charge itself at the various locations and come to you," Musk said.

A lot of auto innovations were displayed at the recently concluded CES 2016 in Las Vegas and in this week’s Detroit Motor Show where automakers showcased great electric and autonomous innovations in their cars.

"In the long term, nobody will buy a car unless it's autonomous," Musk said. "Owning a car that is not self-driving in the long term will be like owning a horse - you would own it and use it for sentimental reasons but not for daily use."

Considering the fact that other upcoming electric car makers have been poaching on its top engineers, and that its exclusively luxury models are only affordable to a few, Tesla has been recording significant losses in its electric and autonomous car business. The company CEO revealed the auto organization may go into mass production of the cheaper Model 3 version by 2017 rather than the more expensive Tesla Model S.
