The off-roading version of the Ford pick-up truck will be made with material used for sport cars.
Ford Motor Co. just made a major announcement at the 2016 Detroit auto show. Ford announced they will be adding the F-150 Raptor to its stable of aluminium-bodied pickups.

The off-roading edition of the F-150 pickup truck will now have an aluminium body. It literally means all Ford North American pickups will be built with steel frames and aluminium bodies.
Until two years ago the design was only reserved for sports cars. Meanwhile both General Motors and Dodge are sticking with steel bodies in their trucks.
The great advantage of aluminium is its relatively light weight. But aluminium is difficult to use in a mass produced setting. Ford will be making 800,000 F-150s a year with aluminium parts for many years.
Ford has found a way to make a large portion of a mass-marketed vehicle out of aluminium. The F-series engine is also a reason for the popularity of its pick-ups. According to Ford the F-series is the best-selling pickup in Canada for 50 years.
In 2015 780,000 F-series trucks were sold. Ford may have switched to aluminium bodies to meet tougher North American economy standards. The government-mandated fuel economy standards will come by 2025. The F-150 Raptor will shed about 350 kg during the switch from steel body to aluminium.
“We want the Ford visitor experience at the North American International Auto Show to be just as innovative as our products and technologies,” said Darrell Bryja, Ford global auto shows manager.

The North American International Auto Show is in its 28th year. The NAIAS is among the most prestigious auto shows in the world. The NAIAS (North American International Auto Show) is hosted at the MGM Grand Detroit. The NAIAS constitutes the release of more than 50 new cars. NAIAS will last from the 16th to the 24th of January, 2016.
