A study found no proof of marijuana use causing low intelligence levels in teenagers.

Almost 50% of Americans smoke marijuana at some stage in their existence. The majority of them start experimentation with this mild drug in their teenage years.

There are studies which draw conclusive evidence of marijuana causing brain damage to the youth but these are controversial to say the least.

In a recent twin study, the extended use of marijuana was studied in teens. Twins who consumed the drug for a period of a decade or so were studied closely to determine any changes in their IQ levels.

The results might surprise you. No evidence was found of marijuana causing brain damage or lowering the intelligence quotient. It was a seminal report and it is welcome in circles in the United States that want to legalize the drug.

Also in another non-twin study the same conclusions were reached independently. However, there are a few limitations. The safety of the drug for teenagers is by no means guaranteed. It might still cause several complications.

The majority of past studies that linked marijuana use to losses in IQ range were limited to a single viewpoint. They did not dig deep down to discover the heart of the matter. It was like the question of which came first…the chicken or the egg.

Whether the users were dumb to begin with or developed the mental deficiencies as a consequence of marijuana usage remained an unknown factor. Large groups of marijuana users were studied by researchers.

Groups of people between 13 and 38 years of age were studied. These were compared with those who used marijuana before the critical age of 18 years. While the study was important it failed to bring into the equation such factors as the user’s family or high school attendance rates.

Identical twins were studied recently. This was where the crux of the issue was resolved once and for all. Over 789 twins were examined and observed.

Over the course of a decade their drug consumption was monitored. Marijuana users lost 4 points on the IQ scale. However, their counterpart twins who remained drug-free also lost the same amount in IQ points.

Therefore, the marijuana use was not responsible for the decline in mental acuity. It may have been school bullying, family dysfunction or peer pressure instead.

There are those who say the study has serious loopholes in it. But it is a good start for now. Maybe in the future, better studies will emerge that will throw further light on the problem.
