Star Wars Episode VII was and still is an epic hit for Disney. The Force Awakens is still in many theaters and has earned so far $861 million at the domestic box office. Global ticket sales reached a staggering $1.88 billion.
Fans of Star Wars: Episode VII likely caused the delay themselves by making it so successful. Usually the biggest blockbuster movies are released during the summer, but the force was extremely strong end of year. Disney likely just decided to not change the time and release Episode VIII also in December.
The production of the new Star Wars movie is already scheduled to begin in February at the Pinewood studios in the UK. Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick) is writing and directing Episode VIII.
Star Wars fans don't have to wait until December 2017 for the next Star Wars movie. In December of this year the spin-off Star Wars movie Rogue One wil be in theaters. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will star Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, and Alan Tudyk.
