  • Volvo V40 contains cushion airbag which deploys outside the car!

The new generation of airbag for the exterior of the vehicle has been designed by Autoliv.

A new generation of airbags are being rapidly designed to buffer a vehicle's exterior. Volvo just unveiled a cushion airbag in its Volvo V40. The airbag has a clean-sheet approach to safety.

The airbag in Volvo V40 is developed by Autoliv. The Autoliv-designed airbag that is stored under the vehicle's hood. The airbag deploys in a collision with a pedestrian to swaddle the A-pillars and windshield wipers.

The airbag allows the rear of the vehicle's hood to lift as to cushion the impact for the pedestrian. The airbag in Volvo V40 deploys in a collision with a pedestrian.

Other airbags are also being tested in Europe which aims to protect pedestrians in head-on collisions. ZF TRW is also working on more ambitious designs for external airbags.

Recently ZF TRW showcased an external side airbag that would protect cars from other vehicles. ZF TRW also participated in a research consortium three years ago. The research built a prototype airbag stowed in the frame rails beneath the doors.

The airbag had a volume of 200 liters and was twice the size of a conventional side curtain. Two inflators were used by the research team to fill the airbag. The airbag was designed to deploy just before the collision.

The researchers deduced the airbag could reduce the force of a side collision by 30%. There are some hurdles but ZF TRW claims to Automotive News that the technology is getting better with work.

Spanish automaker Seat is a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG. Seat was also a member of the research consortium developing the prototype airbag.
