The statuette will get molded in bronze prior to being gilded with a thin layer of 24 karat gold. The president of the Academy Awards said that “with the help of some 21st century technology, we’re able to honor the Oscar’s proud beginnings.”
The new statuette basically epitomizes the beauty of timeless art and the perfect nature of craftsmanship through the ages. Via a cast bronze Oscar, the delicate features of George Stanley’s pristine fugurine is captured in objective form once again. The size is the same as it was in the past.
The past traditions are being retroactively revived. It is a beautiful idea indeed and one that will resurrect the golden era of the Oscars. The focusing of expertise and experience in the formation of the figurine will prove once and for all that “old is gold”.
After making several digital scans of the statuette, its pedestal base was also taken into account in the new design. A 3D printer made the mold and it was first cast in wax.
A coating of ceramic is formed around the surface of the statuette. This is baked in an oven at 1600 degrees Fahrenheit. This of course melts all the wax leaving behind a hollow form.
After this liquid bronze is sprayed on top of this figure and heated to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. Finally, this is cooled and burnished to a polished exterior.
The electroplating process covers the statuette with 24 karat gold. This is accomplished via the valuable services of Epner Technology, a company based in Brooklyn.
A slippery layer of black finishing touches completes the whole procedure. Within a time span of 90 days, 50 statuettes can be churned out easily.
An Oscar statuette is 13.8 inches in height and 8.5 pounds in its overall weight. This scheme to turn out the most ideal of Oscar figurines is slated to end up pleasing the aesthetic senses of the public and the celebs who get the awards.
Tradition is a source of individual talent after all as T.S. Eliot remarked so long ago.
The 88th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 28, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
